The only Republican challenging Donald Trump for the party’s 2020 presidential nomination has warned the president will “get as good as he gives” in what could be a bruising encounter.
Bill Weld, the former Massachusetts governor, vowed to hit back hard if the US president resorts to targetting him on Twitter.
Speaking to The Sunday Telegraph in his first UK newspaper interview since declaring, Mr Weld, 73, said he is taking the unusual step of facing the president at the ballot box as he can’t sit still and watch Mr Trump abandoning allies abroad while refusing to be held accountable at home.
