Un biopic adorablement kitsch.
Pour ce qu’il annonce comme son dernier film, Steven Soderbergh livre une œuvre trompe-l’œil. Si Behind the candelabra retrace la liaison entre l’extravagant pianiste américain, Liberace, et un jeune type paumé, Scott Thorson, à la fin des années 70, il apparaît tout autant comme une fable intemporelle sur le show-business, où ce qui a été adoré finit souvent par être brûlé.
En dépit de son kitsch plus qu’assumé et de son casting époustouflant (en tête, Michael Douglas, magistral en vieille gloire homosexuelle carnassière, et Matt Damon, troublant en « good boy » corrompu), on peut, paradoxalement, être tenté de reprocher à ce biopic – produit par la chaîne HBO et condamné au petit écran, aux Etats-Unis – un certain classicisme.
