MT. SHASTA, CA — A fundraiser was underway Sunday for a California firefighter who suffered severe burns to the face while battling the Klamathon Fire along the California-Oregon border. Cal Fire firefighter Brandon Feller was fighting the massive blaze July 5 when his engine caught on fire, according to a GoFundMe page created for him.
Feller was immediately flown to UC Davis where he is recovering from his injuries.
“At time of admission burns were severe and caused swelling of eyelids,” the GoFundMe page said. “We were concerned about his vision, but today he opened his eyes wide!! He is seeing well in both eyes. He is up and walking around and in great spirits.”
The GoFundMe page said Feller is recovering thanks to the support of those around him, including other firefighters.
“The brotherhood has been a huge comfort and support to Brandon and words cant express how amazed and grateful we are,” the page said.
Loved ones hope to raise $25,000 to help Feller pay for medical bills and expenses, and the fundraiser passed that goal Sunday, raising more than $26,000.
“Brandon’s recovery will limit his ability to return to his normal overtime schedule this fire season,” the GoFundMe page said. “As a firefighter, overtime is where he makes a significant amount of his income.”
As of Sunday, the fire burned more than 33,000 acres, killing one person and destroying more than 72 structures. The fire was 25 percent contained.
