In an interesting turn of events Impact Wrestling has announced they not only will not pursue more legal action against Matt Hardy over ownership of the “broken” Matt Hardy name and gimmick but will be allowing wrestlers to use their characters created in Impact wrestling elsewhere.
Impact Wrestling has, in the recent past, been in a legal war with Matt Hardy over the popular “Broken Matt Hardy” gimmick and who owned the rights to that storyline and the name. On Monday night’s RAW, Matt made more references to the storyline when he started his “Delete!” catchphrase during the show. Impact quickly addressed the issue by releasing a statement saying they were working on letting talent both current and former keep their gimmicks and names. That statement reads:
We have seen the character development and will be interested to see where they take the concept. Our new talent agreements all incorporate language that allow talent to continue to use their IMPACT persona after they leave the company. We are working with our legal team to amend our existing agreements to extend this to all of our current and former talent.

It is being reported by PWInsider that parent company Anthem Sports and Entertainment head Ed Nordholm made the call to rework talent contracts himself. Rumors have sprung up that Jeff Jarrett’s firing from the company may have had something to do with the change of heart, but that is not known as of yet. It was reported that the time that when Jarrett came back to the company that he tightened the restrictions on creative freedom over the Impact wrestlers, leading to many of them leaving the company. This change of heart has been reported as a way to open up the communication and relationship with the Impact wrestlers and management, and maybe a way for former talent to return to the chaotic company. With the rumored money issues that have sprung up in recent months with Anthem, this may also be a way to no longer spend lots of money in pricey legal battles over name and image with former employees as well.
