New Japan Pro Wrestling put on what some have called the greatest professional wrestling match of all time earlier this year when Bullet Club leader Kenny Omega faced off against Kazuchika Okada at Wrestle Kingdom 11. So when it was announced that they would be having a rematch at New Japan’s Dominion pay-per-view, expectations for the match were very high, and somehow the two delivered. They put on a match that many have claimed to be better than the original from earlier this year, including the Wrestling Observer’s commander-in-chief.
Despite the match ending with Okada retaining his title via a draw after sixty minutes, Dave Meltzer awarded the match an incredible 6.25 star rating on his website. Meltzer awarded the original match between Okada and Omega with six stars. As a whole, he gave the NJPW Dominion show a fairly generous 6.11 rating. The rating for Okada/Omega II however, is special in that it is the highest rated match ever given by Meltzer. Dave has been giving star ratings to professional wrestling matches for over three decades. By the Wrestling Observer leader’s standards, Okada/Omega II was the greatest match that the wrestling historian has ever seen.
Kazuchika Okada and Kenny Omega are regarded as two of the greatest professional wrestlers in the entire industry today, so maybe Meltzer has a point with his high rating. The star ratings have always been made with the sole opinion of Dave Meltzer, so he is not speaking for the entire wrestling community as a whole when he releases star ratings. Okada is still the IWGP Heavyweight Champion, and he will now go on to face former WWE star Cody Rhodes at the G1 Special this summer. Regardless of what some may think of Meltzer’s rating, Okada and Omega put on an instant classic in Japan recently, and it will go down as one of the most memorable matches in the history of the sport of professional wrestling.
