We can FINALLY put the never-ending rumor and speculation to bed – Rey Mysterio will NOT be competing at WrestleMania 34 next weekend in New Orleans.
There’s been a steady stream of reports coming in ever since the former WWE Champion made a surprise return to the company at January’s Royal Rumble pay-per-view. Several weeks ago Sports Illustrated’s Justin Barrasso reported that Rey was being considered to face John Cena in place of the Undertaker, and then later reported that he was being considered as Braun Strowman’s partner instead.
Mysterio made an appearance on this week’s episode of BELOW THE BELT with Brendan Schaub and explicitly shot down an appearance at WrestleMania, stating that he hopes to be back in action next month. The interview begins at 21:23 in the video below.
“Unfortunately I just suffered a torn bicep three weeks ago. I opted not to get surgery, so I’m just going to kick back, doing some therapy and hopefully I’ll be ready next month.”
WWE and Mysterio are still in communication and the future Hall of Famer is expected to return to the company when he is medically cleared to do so. He has also promised the fans that he will compete again for New Japan as soon as he’s able to, after the injury unexpectedly forced him off the recent NJPW Strong Style Evolved show in Long Beach, where he was scheduled to face Jushin Thunder Liger in a dream match.
