As reported by L’Équipe, PSG’s pursuit of Bayern Munich’s 33-year-old Polish striker Robert Lewandowski could have major knock-on effects for Neymar’s position within the team.
In discussing how PSG might line up with Lewandowksi in their team for next season, three of the four options proposed by the sports daily omitted Neymar from the starting 11. The only option listed that included the Brazilian world record transfer was a gung-ho 4-2-4 set up which may not be practical in major Champions League ties against similarly powered opponents.
As a result, Neymar, who was PSG’s second top scorer last season with 13 goals – well short of Kylian Mbappé’s 39, could spend much of next season starting on the bench. This would be a very unusual position for Neymar, as he nearly always starts for PSG if fit, and is rarely rested or substituted.
L’Équipe reported last month that PSG would be open to selling the 30-year-old should a good offer come in this summer with Kylian Mbappé, enjoying new importance within the club following his contract renewal, reportedly telling the club would not be against the Brazilian’s sale. Foot Mercato even reported Neymar has been offered to other clubs as Paris look to reduce their wage bill.
Although much will depend on who PSG’s new coach might be, after Mauricio Pochettino was reportedly informed he would be removed this week, the other three formation options saw either Mbappé paired with Lewandowski in attack with Lionel Messi dropping in behind or Mbappé lining up on the left of a three-man attack.
