The chief executive of the 2023 Rugby World Cup, Claude Atcher, has been fired after a report into his management style produced its findings.

Atcher was suspended in August following allegations over his behaviour, with L’Equipe reporting that burnout and panic attacks were issues raised by staff.

But on Tuesday it was announced that after a report from the French Labour Inspectorate, Atcher has now been sacked, with Julien Collette appointed CEO.

France host the 2023 event

The report found that Atcher had overseen an “extremely degraded social environment” at the organising committee, with France hosting the World Cup in 2023.

“Taking note of the report’s conclusions, France 2023’s board has decided to terminate the contract of CEO Claude Atcher,” read a statement from France 2023.

“The report brought forward by the French Labour Inspectorate corroborates and complements the report produced by the France 2023 Ethics Committee.”

Collette is Atcher’s former deputy general director and will take over the chief executive position as the clock ticks down towards the global showpiece.

France begin the tournament with a mouth-watering clash with New Zealand on Friday, September 8 in front of what will be a packed Stade de France.

Les Bleus in great form

Other teams in the host nation’s pool are Italy, Namibia and Uruguay, with Les Bleus one of the favourites to win the Webb Ellis silverware on home soil.

Fabien Galthie’s troops have been in sparkling form on the field in recent years, claiming the Six Nations Grand Slam in 2022 as they build towards 2023.

While the off-field news is not ideal, it should not impact on the team as they look to become the second northern hemisphere side to claim the World Cup.
