The only way I could possibly unveil Kacey Musgraves's look at the 2021 VMAs is to tell you to feast your eyes because her look for the night certainly is a feast. During the pre-show ceremony on September 12, the country singer-songwriter stepped out on the red carpet in a satin purple mini dress, red leather gloves up to her elbows, classic hair and makeup — oh, and a purple feather headdress that engulfs her entire head.
In all seriousness, this is entire look a choice… one that's very much working in Musgraves's favor. Although one might spot similar purple feathers on an episode of Sesame Street, you can't deny that they turn heads. One might even say this outfit is an ode to some of Princess Diana's most iconic appearances — she certainly did love a red-purple color combo. It's definitely not the only fashion or beauty experiment Musgraves has achieved recently (see: her gem-encrusted eyebrows from the "Star Crossed" music video).
To up the ante of this dress and headdress even more, Musgraves opted for soft, smoky eye makeup in a coordinating lavender hue and a demi-matte, peachy nude lip — achieved by the singer's right-hand makeup artist, Moani Lee, using Pat McGrath Labs products. But not before Lee used 111Skin products to prep her skin.
As far as what's happening with Musgraves's hair, we can't quite tell thanks to… well, you know. One thing's for sure, though: as always, the black-brown hair we can see is shinier than the rims on a brand-new Porsche.
Personally, I have to ask: Will she be wearing this headpiece for the entire award ceremony? If so, I guess what they say is true: Beauty really is pain. Kacey, girl, is your neck doing OK?
