Commission to present new neighbourhood policy
Strategy to be published Tuesday in response to popular uprisings in north Africa.
Proposals for the overhaul of the European Union’s Neighbourhood Policy are to be published on Tuesday (24 May), the European Commission has announced.
The European Neighbourhood Policy is the Union’s framework for relations with eastern Europe and the countries of the southern Mediterranean.
Štefan Füle, the European commissioner for enlargement and neighbourhood policy, has said that he wants a policy that better responds to the democratic aspirations of people in the region. The ENP had been criticised for not failing to make democratic reform a precondition for financial assistance. The revised policy is supposed to provide “more for more”, that is, increased financial aid for increased reform.
The review was originally scheduled to be presented to the college of European commissioners last month but was delayed several times, among other things by disagreements between Füle and Catherine Ashton, the EU’s foreign policy chief.
