Cyprus’ proximity to Syria has led a number of British holidaymakers to query whether a visit to the holiday island is safe.
The north-east coast of Cyprus is less than 100 miles from western Syria, and with the recent Turkish offensive into the north of the country, there are concerns the island could be affected.
The Foreign Office (FCO) says around one million British nationals visit Cyprus every year, and most trips are trouble free.
Last year, an escalation in the conflict in Syria led Eurocontrol, the body in charge of air traffic in Europe, to warn that flights could be disrupted. The presence of “air-to-ground and/or cruise missiles” meant commercial airlines should take “due consideration” when planning routes in the region, it said.
