Did you know there are fourteen championships currently active in WWE today? A grand total of seventeen if you count the three different sets of tag team titles individually.
To be fair, there are about ten million active performers on the WWE roster split between Raw, Smackdown Live, 205 Live, NXT, Main Event, the United Kingdom division, and all the various developmental talents currently training at the WWE Performance Center. So naturally, with that many active titles and competitors all gunning for them, some of them are bound to fall by the wayside. You just can’t have fourteen active titles and make all of them important. Even New Japan, famous for its booking of great championship reigns (shout-out to Okada and Ospreay), frequently has titles that don’t really matter all that much.
So what makes a great champion? There are a ton of factors, but for the sake of this article I’m considering a great champion to be someone who simply makes me CARE about their respective prize. If you can make me buy a ticket to see you defend your title, no matter where that match falls on the card, you’re an effective champion. If I can’t remember who the current reigning U.S. Champion is off the top of my head, chances are the U.S. Champion isn’t doing a great job making his belt feel important.
So today we’re going to look at the best WWE has to offer. We’re going to rank every single champion from the ones we care the least about, to the superstars we absolutely can’t miss week after week. HERE WE GO!
